ENG · Alchemy: complex of philosophical theories, magic and experiences of direct investigation of nature, from which gradually developed chemistry, common in Europe from late antiquity to the early centuries of the modern age and aiming at the discovery of the philosopher’s stone, capable of changing the metals into gold and at preparing the elixir of life.
Science and philosophy, truth and superstition, physical and metaphysical are opposites that coexist within the definition of alchemy. An ancestral discipline which has its roots in prehistory, in the very instant in which man discovered the properties of metals and gave them a mystical meaning. A system which is both empirical and symbolic, capable of uniting spiritual and material goals – the conversion of metals into gold and the spiritual purification of those who perform the experiment. But believe it or not the philosopher’s stone ability to procure the omniscience or the panacea to cure all diseases, the true power of Alchemy is the fascination that still exerts in all spheres of human knowledge: philosophy, theology, psychoanalysis, literature, music and – not least – art.
At this point it seems obvious to write the reasons why Yety decided to dedicate a series of drawings to the old Ars Magna. The illustrations of Onniscienza are alchemical operations themeselves: all is in black and white, without shades of gray. None of the shades are gray, not even those which appear to be: they are merely given by accumulation or subtraction of black, by the enlargement or shrinkage of lines and dots that contribute to build the image. What to the eye has a concrete shape and consistence is instead immaterial and atomic, fragmented into infinite particles. Even the imagery is fragmented. In Rubedo swastikas and pentacles coexist with religious reminiscences; the references to classical architecture of Talismano interact with the impossible images of Pentacolo Spaziale. In Nigredo mathematical, animal and organic symbols live together. Here the ethereal substance emanating from a dead crow ideally joins the sticky, metallic and heavy one which drips from a geometrical Saturn (a circle inscribed in a triangle). But there is no chaos, the opposites match and order themselves in a new kind of syncretism. Everything works. So that, at the end, while looking at these illustrations, it’s not too important knowing that the primary inspiration of Onniscienza is alchemy: we are dealing with the personal universe and imaginary of Yety.
